The Guardian

The Guardian

The Guardian is a British national daily newspaper

Founded in 1821, it was known as The Manchester Guardian until 1959. From its beginnings as a local paper it has grown into a national paper associated with a complex organisational structure and an international multimedia and web presence. The Guardian is currently edited by Alan Rusbridger. Its sister papers include The Observer (a British Sunday paper) and The Guardian Weekly. It has two online outlets based outside the United Kingdom, Guardian Australia and Guardian US.

In August 2013, The Guardian in paper form had an average daily circulation of 189,000 copies, behind The Daily Telegraph and The Times, but ahead of The Independent.[3] The newspaper's online edition was the third most widely read in the world as of June 2012.[4] Its combined print and online editions reach nearly 9 million readers.[5]

Founded in 1821 by John Edward Taylor in Manchester with backing from the non-conformist Little Circle group of local businessmen, The Manchester Guardian replaced the radical Manchester Observer, which championed the Peterloo Massacre protesters. The paper currently identifies with social liberalism. In the last UK general election in 2010, it supported the Liberal Democrats, who went on to form a coalition government with the Conservatives. The paper is influential in the design and publishing arena, sponsoring many awards in these areas.

The Guardian has changed format and design over the years, moving from broadsheet to Berliner. It has become an international media organisation with affiliations to other national papers with similar aims. The Guardian Weekly, which circulates worldwide, contains articles from The Guardian and its sister Sunday paper The Observer, as well as reports, features, and book reviews from The Washington Post and articles translated from Le Monde. Other projects include GuardianFilm, the current editorial director of which is Maggie O'Kane.

Notable scoops include the newspaper's breaking of the News International phone hacking scandal in 2011, particularly with the revelation of the hacking of murdered teenager Milly Dowler's phone.[6] The investigation brought about the closure of one of the highest circulation newspapers in the world, the News of the World.[7] The newspaper also broke news of the secret collection of Verizon telephone records held by Barack Obama's administration in June 2013,[8] and subsequently revealed the existence of the PRISM surveillance program after it was leaked to the paper by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.[9] The Guardian was named newspaper of the year at the 2014 British Press Awards, for its reporting on government surveillance.</div>

The Voice (U.S. season 6)

The Voice (U.S. season 6)

The sixth season of the American reality talent show The Voice began on February 24, 2014[1] on NBC. Carson Daly returned to host. Adam Levine and Blake Shelton returned as coaches for their sixth season, while Shakira and Usher returned for their second season after being replaced by original coaches Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green in season five. On May 20, 2014, Josh Kaufman of Team Usher was announced as the winner of the season, with Jake Worthington of Team Blake as runner-up and Christina Grimmie of Team Adam in third place.

Coaches and hosts

The coaching panel once again saw a change as Adam Levine and Blake Shelton were rejoined by season four coaches Shakira and Usher. Christina Aguilera took another hiatus from the show and CeeLo Green departed at the end of season five. Carson Daly returned as host.[2] It was reported that Christina Milian, who served as the social media correspondent in seasons two through four, was open to returning,[3] but ultimately did not. Josh Kaufman was the first steal to win The Voice.

Artists serving as mentors for the first battle rounds included Miranda Lambert (who previously appeared in the second season in the series as an advisor) for Team Shakira,[4] The Band Perry for Team Blake,[5] Jill Scott for Team Usher,[6] and Aloe Blacc for Team Adam.[7]

With the replacement of the Knockout Round with the "Battles, Round 2", Coldplay frontman Chris Martin served as the sole advisor for all four teams.[8]

Promotions

special look at the season was premiered on February 19, 2014, featuring Christina Grimmie's full audition covering Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball". All four coaches turned for her, but her choice of coach was not shown.[13] A second special look at the season was premiered the following day, featuring Bria Kelly's full audition covering "Steamroller Blues". All four coaches also turned for her, but like Grimmie, her ultimate choice of coach was not shown.[14] A third preview featuring Clarissa Serna's cover of The Cranberries' song "Zombie" was released on February 28, 2014 to promote the second week of the Blind Auditions. Like Grimmie and Kelly, her choice was not shown.[15]

Blind auditions

The Blind Auditions were taped between October 10 and 13, 2013 with Usher and Shakira returning.[16] The first episode of the Blind auditions premiered on February 24, 2014.

Live shows

The live shows is the final phase of the competition. It consists of five weekly shows and the season finale. For season six, the show expanded upon the "Instant Save" introduced in season five; once the three artists with the lowest vote totals are announced during the results show (except the Live Finale), each of those three artists sing an additional song before the Twitter voting window opens. Also, "Instant Save" vote totals are shown in a ticker bar onscreen during its five-minute voting window (including throughout the commercial break) to update viewers on each contestant's percentage of votes.
